Part-Time Politics Editor
USA TODAY/usatoday.com is seeking a temporary part-time experienced editor to work on our Politics and Washington team.
The ideal candidate should have a passion for politics and the versatility to be comfortable handling stories on a wide range of subjects, the 2024 election to breaking news on Congress, federal courts and world affairs.
A minimum of three years of experience editing is strongly preferred. This job would be a great fit for someone who loves working in a collaborative and fast-paced environment.
Location is in our DC Bureau /Eye Street NW.
Job Level: Editor III
Minimum salary for this position: $35.00 per hour. $72,800 = Full-Time Equivalent
Responsibilities:
- Edit and publish stories from our busy Politics and Washington team that covers topics, including the White House, Congress, the 2024, criminal justice and Supreme.
- Optimize content, paying special attention to headlines, SEO and fields visible to social audiences.
- Coach reporters with varying levels of experience.
- Lead not only on reporting and accuracy but also fairness and context.
- Use social and other tools to spot high-interest items.
- Uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity, ethics and credibility.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master’s degree in journalism or any other subject or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 5 years of experience in professional journalism experience.
- The ability to work with reporters to refine and elevate copy.
- A talent for both careful line editing and helping to craft lively headlines.
- An eagerness to use a variety of tools, including SEO, to help stories find their widest possible audience.
- You must be willing to work some weekend shifts.
- Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check.
