This is a temporary position.

The Basic Needs Specialist will work in coordination with the Basic Needs Coordinator to support food security services, including but not limited to CalFresh application support and free grocery distributions. As of now, both of these services are offered in partnership with Alameda County Community Food Bank, where MOU's were developed between Ohlone College and ACCFB to provide CalFresh outreach, application support, and problem resolution. Additionally, Ohlone College has been offered membership into ACCFB's food network and is in the process of developing that partnership in order to access free grocery items to distribute to the community. Grocery distributions will take several forms, including distributions using the “Community Market”, which is a
grocery-store-style pantry built on the Fremont campus and “Free Farmers Markets”, which are
pop-up food distributions on both the Fremont and Newark campuses. Food distribution services will require working with several community partnerships, including but not limited to ACCFB, Tri-City Volunteers, and the Daily Bowl.

Under general supervision of the Director of Student Life, the Basic Needs Specialist will guide work related to MOU's with community partners to expand CalFresh access and free grocery distributions across the Ohlone Community College District. Additionally, the Basic Needs Specialist will provide intentional outreach and specialized program information to historically minoritized student populations; provide application assistance for public benefits such as CalFresh; partner with other student services and instructional departments; tracking of budgetary expenses such as Community Market and Free Farmer's Market purchases; assist with coverage and procurement of food for the of the district's food distributions; plan and implement operational logistics of food distributions; perform administrative support and input program-specific information into databases and computer systems; and perform other related duties as assigned.




  1. Support with college-wide food distribution efforts, including providing work direction to student workers, scheduling staffing; ordering, receiving, and stocking food items; planning food procurement logistics, and maintaining food quality controls.
  2. Assist students applying for food assistance programs, such as Calfresh by providing information about programs, pre-screening program participants, aiding with completing applications, and providing appropriate program participation verification documents. Assisting in implementing MOU's with community organizations to perform all CalFresh
  3. Maintain regular contact with program participants to determine student needs and provide information regarding available services, including housing, in tandem with coordination from the Basic Needs Coordinator.
  4. Refer students to applicable community, business and governmental agencies, as well as appropriate student and academic support services offered by the college.
  5. Support the planning and staffing of outreach events to inform students of the Basic Needs Resource Center; assist students with the application process for the CalFresh program and registration process for food distributions.
  6. Communicate with faculty, staff, students, administrators, other educational institutions, community and business representatives, vendors, governmental agencies, and the public regarding available services, eligibility requirements, policies, timelines, required forms, and other information related to the Basic Needs Resource Center.
  7. Serve as a District representative on various committees associated with the program.
  8. Provide guidance and technical direction to project personnel, including student workers.
  9. Documents client interaction and maintain accurate paperwork/reports, attends other specified meetings/trainings as required.
  10. Support in data collection and analysis of data; participate in the preparation and submission of fiscal reports, program plans, progress reports, and other narrative and statistical reports as required and in accordance with District and external agency requirements.
  11. Compose, format, prepare and distribute correspondence, memoranda, publicity materials, surveys, brochures, flyers, bulletins, reports, presentations, and other materials; create and disseminate outreach materials to support the Basic Needs Resource Center.




Minimum Qualifications
Any combination equivalent to: bachelor's degree and three years of professional experience.
AND
Must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.
