Position overview
Position title: Economics Disciplinary Communication Pre-six Lecturer
Salary range: A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach a standard five-credit course is $11,465- $12,904 (based on salary points 12-16), please see the UCSC Salary Scales and refer to the Non-senate Instructional (NSI) Unit 18 Pre-six Lecturer Academic Year scale. Instructional Workload Credit (IWC) valuation may vary and the course salary will be adjusted accordingly. Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year (see Summer Session Faculty and Lecturer Pay).

Percent time: Variable, based on the course load assigned.

Anticipated start: Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit’s instructional need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments made in fall quarter 2023 through fall quarter 2024. Initial appointments with effective dates outside of this recruitment period will require an alternative open recruitment.

Position duration: Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

Position Description


The Department of Economics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers who may be appointed to teach courses satisfying the disciplinary communication (DC) requirement for the Economics Department. The position requires that lecturers have the ability to teach writing in the discipline of at least one DC course. Currently our department offers two DC courses: Econ 197: Economics Rhetoric and Econ 104: Is there Truth in Numbers?

In our DC general education courses for undergraduate economics degrees, students develop empirical analysis skills applied to real economic data by reading, analyzing, discussing, writing, providing feedback and/or presenting topics bearing on issues related to economic theory and policy. Instruction will be at the upper-division undergraduate level. Qualified candidates will demonstrate a knowledge of economics, and strong writing and communication skills. The successful candidate must be able to work with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds as well as be ready to deliver online instruction. Applicants who meet the basic qualifications and have college level teaching experience are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • M.A./M.S. or higher (or equivalent foreign degree).
  • Knowledge of economics demonstrated by a degree in economics, experience teaching economics courses, or managerial experience involving budgetary and economic decisions.
  • Teaching experience demonstrated by prior record of teaching, TA experience, research presentations, or professional development training seminars.
