Assistant or Associate Professor in the Reading/Writing/Literacy (RWL) Program
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Apr 21, 2023
Deadline:
The Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Reading/Writing/Literacy (RWL) program. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research programs focus on reading and literacy in the early grades. Penn GSE and the RWL program share a strong ethical commitment to advancing social justice and educational equity, and we seek candidates whose scholarship centers on issues of race and equity and foregrounds an expansive and critical view of literacy. We seek a scholar with strong research, publishing, and graduate teaching and mentoring potential and dedication to securing external support for their research.
Qualifications
A successful candidate will address all three of the following areas. First, the candidate will have deep knowledge of and experience with early literacy development, particularly in teaching reading and literacy in the early elementary grades. Ideally, the candidate’s scholarship in this area is contributing (or could contribute) to emerging knowledge about children’s early literacy learning in consequential ways. Second, the candidate will draw on expansive understandings of literacy/literacies in their scholarship, contributing to contemporary theories of literacy in ways that will allow them to teach and mentor emerging literacy scholars. Third, the candidate will be committed to preparing educators to teach diverse learners in urban school districts like Philadelphia. While not one of the focal areas, we would be interested in scholars who could also contribute to the program’s legacy in studying the role of children’s literature and texts, broadly conceived, in early literacy pedagogy and practice.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit a CV, cover letter, names of 3 references, and up to three writing samples. Applications will be reviewed beginning Sept. 1 until the position is filled.
Penn GSE seeks candidates who, through their research, teaching, and service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. We are strongly committed to Penn’s Action Plan for Faculty Diversity and Excellence and to establishing a more diverse faculty (for more information see: http://www.upenn.edu/almanac/volumes/v58/n02/diversityplan.html).
